Diet coke and mentos

Mentos reacts strongly to all carbonated drinks owing to some of its molecular properties. Well, I'm doing a project on motion with Mentos and Diet Coke, and I was hoping someone could answer a few questions for me.

This is likely for two reasons.

Would a plastic water bottle be enough to hold Coke and Mentos together after I shake it? Note that while caffeine is often cited as something that will increase the explosive reaction with the soda, this is not actually the case, at least diet coke and mentos given the relatively small amount of caffeine found in a typical 2-liter bottle of soda generally used for these sorts of Diet Coke and Mentos reactions.

Put some sort of funnel or tube on top of it so you can drop the Mentos in at the same time about half the pack is a good amount. They were inspired by a MythBusters episode that, according to the paper"did a wonderful job of identifying the basic ingredients in this reaction It has also been shown that a wide variety of beverage additives such as sugars, citric acid, and natural flavors can also enhance fountain heights.

This is another reason Mentos works so much better than other similar confectioneries: Update 3: Is there a chance of the bottle bursting?

The faster it sinks, the faster the reaction can happen, and a faster reaction creates a bigger geyser; a slower reaction may release the same amount of foam overall, but will also create a much smaller geyser.

This means that there is a whole lot of carbon dioxide gas just waiting to escape the liquid in the form of bubbles. Although there are a few different theories around about how this experiment works, the most favoured reason is because of the combination of carbon dioxide in the Diet Coke and the little dimples found on Mentos candy pieces.

I'm glad I can use normal Coke, But caffeine-free Diet Coke did just as well, suggesting that caffeine does not accelerate the reaction, at least at the normal levels in the drink. When this happens fast enough, you get a nice Diet Coke fountain.

First, the act of drinking soda releases quite a bit of the carbonation in it, limiting the possible effect. So let that be a lesson to you.

If you've done it properly a huge geyser of Diet Coke should come flying out of the bottle, it's a very impressive sight.

In JuneDr. In these cases, the ingredients end up lowering the surface tension of the liquid, allowing for even more rapid bubble growth on the porous surface of the Mentos—higher surface tension would make it a more difficult environment for bubbles to form.

It's All About Texture Coffey and company discovered that the ingredients in the Mentos and Diet Coke and, more importantly, the structure of the Mentos, allow carbon dioxide bubbles to form extremely rapidly. You can also check out some of their videos here.

If you use a nozzle that makes the opening at the top of the bottle even smaller, the jet of liquid will go even higher. Diet sodas produce a bigger reaction than non-diet sodas because aspartame lowers the surface tension of the liquid much more than sugar or corn syrup will.

But because they are smooth and clean, the activation energy is still relatively high, and the process is slow.

Diet Coke and Mentos Experiment?

You can repeat the eruption with the same bottle and another stack of candies. Does normal Coke work? The easiest way to do this is to stack them in a test tube narrow enough to form a single column.

PepperI noticed I started to feel like I was going to throw up. The record is about 9 metres 29 feet high! · Best Answer: There has been a mythbuster episode of the mentos and coke. I would recommend watching that prior to beginning your project as it will answer many of your questions, such as how to drop the mentos into the coke Open. It’s been called the “vinegar and baking soda” reaction for a new generation.

While science teachers have been dropping candies and mints into 2-liter bottles of soda for years in an effort to release all of the dissolved carbon dioxide, the Mentos and Diet Coke reaction became world famous in Video Duration: 2 min.

Science of Mentos-Diet Coke explosions explained

How Does This Work? Why do Diet Coke & Mentos and Coke Zero & Mentos create such exciting geysers? It’s mostly due to a process called nucleation, where the carbon dioxide in the soda is attracted to the Mentos (they are awfully cute).

Combine Diet Coke and Mentos, and the result is explosive—Diet Coke shoots out of the bottle like a miniature, sticky Old Faithful. The reaction is so intense, you can make a rocket propelled by.
